Welcome to Nature Nerds
Nature Nerds was created by a wildlife-loving mum and son with a passion for the weird, wonderful and often overlooked parts of the natural world.
From insects and native plants to birds, reptiles, fungi and backyard wildlife, this page is a place for us to share photos, videos, discoveries and all the fascinating little things we learn along the way.
As a wildlife educator and wildlife carer, I’ve always loved animals and nature, and one of the most rewarding things has been watching that same curiosity and excitement grow in my little junior Nature Nerd too.
We hope this page encourages kids (and adults!) to slow down, look closer and realise there’s an entire world of incredible life hiding in our own backyards.
Nature Nerds is also about embracing curiosity, doing things that bring YOU joy and showing kids that being a “nerd” is something to be proud of.
So whether you’re here for fluffy moths, strange insects, native plants, tiny creatures or just to learn something new…
welcome and thanks for joining us.
Live Emperor Gum Moth Life Cycle Kits
We are excited to be able to offer a small number of educational live Emperor Gum Moth Lifecycle kits.
(At the moment these are only available for delivery in the south east suburbs of Melbourne)
These kits come with caterpillars that are already in their final growth stage (last instar), meaning children will be able to witness some of the MOST fascinating parts of the lifecycle, and the transformation into one of Australia’s largest and beautiful native moths,up close, including:
colour changes before pupation
the wandering stage
cocoon spinning
moth emergence
Each $55 kit includes:
3 caterpillars
Pop-up mesh enclosure
Jar with cover
Starter feed eucalyptus leaf
Digital care guide
QR-linked lifecycle videos
**Worksheets available for homeschoolers and primary schools at no extra cost
You will only need to provide the water and some sticks/twigs!
All moths and caterpillars are captive born and raised, and are not collected from the wild.
These kits and resources have been developed through captive rearing experience by a wildlife educator and wildlife carer.
This is the very first small release while we continue building additional videos and classroom resources, so numbers are limited
A wonderful opportunity for children to observe and appreciate the incredible lifecycle of one of Australia’s largest and most beautiful native moths in person, while learning about native wildlife and the important role insects play in our ecosystems.
“If children grow up not knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it. And if they don't understand it, they won't protect it. And if they don't protect it, who will?”
— David Attenborough
